Des Plaines currently receives its water from the City of Chicago and subsequently distributes through a network of water main, storage facilities, and pumping stations to about 18,000 customers. Water System Maintenance Division is responsible for secondary treatment of the water received from Chicago as well as the operation and maintenance of approximately 200 miles of water main and the affiliated storage and pumping facilities.
Each year, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency requires each
community water system in the state to complete a Consumer Confidence
Report (CCR) through the Safe Drinking Water Act. The CCR includes basic
information on the source(s) of water, the levels of any contaminants
detected in the water, and compliance with other drinking water rules,
as well as some brief educational material. Read our most current Consumer Confidence Report.

The City is committed to protecting one of the most precious resources we have, drinking water. To that end, it is imperative that we continue to conserve water when possible. The City has an even-odd address watering restriction in effect from May 15 through September 15 every year.
Hours for watering are from 5:00 am to 8:00 am and 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Even numbered addresses may water on even numbered calendar days; odd number addresses may water on odd numbered calendar days.
PLEASE NOTE: Restrictions may be waived for new plantings that require more watering after initial installation (such as sod, trees, and bushes). Please contact the Public Works Department at 847.391.5464 for more information.
