Permit Overview

The City's Community and Economic Development Department (CED) is here to help with your questions Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Permits are required for a number of different projects to protect the health, safety, and welfare of our residents. (Click here to download our General Permit Information)

Activities that Require Building Permits

Following is a list of projects that require a City of Des Plaines Building Permit. This list is not all-inclusive: 

  • Fences, decks and stairs, concrete, asphalt, or paver brick driveways, sidewalks, patios, stoops, and stairs
  • Demolitions, doors (Exterior), extensive interior remodeling work
  • Fire sprinklers and mechanical systems (heating and air conditioning)
  • Grading changes, retention walls, or other landscaping involving topographical changes
  • New electric service or additional devices requiring new lines, new structures and any structural changes, plumbing (water heaters, etc.)
  • Roofing, re-roofing, or tear-off, sewer repairs or clean-outs, sheds, shoring and foundation repairs, siding, signs, banners, tents, swimming pools, spas, and hot tubs, and window

Code Updates

Beginning January 1, 2016, the City of Des Plaines began utilizing the 2015 versions of the Current Building Codes. At the same time, the City of Des Plaines began utilizing the 2014 version of the National Electrical Code.
