Overview
Permits are required for a number of different projects in order to assure that these projects meet applicable building codes. The City of Des Plaines has adopted building codes in order to protect the health, safety, and welfare of our residents. View general permit information.

Projects That Require a Permit
Following is a list of projects that require a City of Des Plaines Building Permit. This list is not all-inclusive: 
  • Fences
  • Decks and stairs
  • Concrete, asphalt, or paver brick driveways, sidewalks, patios, stoops, and stairs
  • Demolitions
  • Doors (Exterior)
  • Extensive interior remodeling work
  • Fire sprinklers 
  • Grading changes, retention walls, or other landscaping involving topographical changes
  • Low voltage alarms and phone wiring
  • Mechanical systems (heating and air conditioning)
  • New electric service or additional devices requiring new lines
  • New structures and any structural changes
  • Plumbing (water heaters, etc.)
  • Roofing, reroofing, or tear-off
  • Sewer repairs or clean-outs
  • Sheds
  • Shoring and foundation repairs
  • Siding
  • Signs, banners, and tents
  • Swimming pools, spas, and hot tubs

Garage Sale Permit Requirements


Any person conducting a garage, basement, house, estate sale, etc. on premises that is zoned for or used for residential purposes must apply for and obtain an occasional sale permit. The sale permit is granted for a maximum of three consecutive days with a general limit of two sales per year per premise. If the residents are moving or vacating the premises, one additional sale is permitted for that year.

Permits cost $5 (effective 10/7/13) and are purchased from the Community and Economic Development Department on the Third Floor at City Hall from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The permit must be obtained before the sale starts and must be prominently displayed at the sale. Signs advertising the sale may only be posted on a stake in the property lawn and must be removed by 6:00 pm on the last day of the permitted sale. No advertising signs are permitted on telephone and light poles, street signs, or any City right of way.
