Building Permits
Overview
Permits are required for a number of different projects in order to assure that these projects meet applicable building codes. The City of Des Plaines has adopted building codes in order to protect the health, safety, and welfare of our residents. View general permit information.

Most projects costing more than $15,000 will require stamped architectural plans. All permit applications require a current Plat of Survey. Licensed, bonded, and insured contractors are required for many types of permits.
Projects That Require a Permit
Following is a list of projects that require a City of Des Plaines Building Permit. This list is not all-inclusive:
- Fences
- Decks and stairs
- Concrete, asphalt, or paver brick driveways, sidewalks, patios, stoops, and stairs
- Demolitions
- Doors (Exterior)
- Extensive interior remodeling work
- Fire sprinklers
- Grading changes, retention walls, or other landscaping involving topographical changes
- Low voltage alarms and phone wiring
- Mechanical systems (heating and air conditioning)
- New electric service or additional devices requiring new lines
- New structures and any structural changes
- Plumbing (water heaters, etc.)
- Roofing, reroofing, or tear-off
- Sewer repairs or clean-outs
- Sheds
- Shoring and foundation repairs
- Siding
- Signs, banners, and tents
- Swimming pools, spas, and hot tubs
- Windows
