The City of Des Plaines is home to many schools. Children can be found walking to and from these schools throughout the entire school year. Crossing guards are present to help children cross the streets safely. In Des Plaines there are approximately 41 schools crossing zones where crossing guards are stationed. Crossing guards wear a traffic safety vest and hold a portable stop sign making it easy to identify them. Everyone must obey his or her lawful commands. State law requires full obedience to crossing guards, equal to that of a police officer. Any person convicted of violating this law is subject to a mandatory fine of $150.


Special Crossing Assistance

Crossing Guards are assigned to designated school crossings with regular morning and afternoon hours.
The police department may grant requests for special crossing assistance at designated school crossings outside of regular crossing times. 

Schools or organizations that would like to request special assistance in crossing the street need to do so in writing by completing a “Crossing Guard Request Form”.   

Complete and submit the attached “Crossing Guard Request Form” 48 hours prior to the event by mail, fax, or e-mail to:
