  • Monthly Blood Pressure Screenings
    • No appointment or fee for a blood pressure check
    • Sites include:
      • Frisbie Senior Center - 52 E. Northwest Highway, second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 9:00 am to 10:00 am
      • Self-Help Closet and Pantry - 600 E. Algonquin, second and fourth Tuesdays of each month from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm
      • Prairie Lakes - 515 Thacker, second Tuesday of the month from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm and the third Thursday of each month from 9:00 am to 10:00 am
      • Des Plaines Public Library - 1501 Ellinwood, third Tuesday of the month from 10:00 am to 11:00 am
  • Monthly Cholesterol Screenings
    • For Des Plaines residents on the first Thursday of the month at City Hall in Room 101, from 8:30 am to noon
    • Appointments required for the screening; call 847-391-5480 to set up your appointment
    • Available cholesterol tests:
      • Cholesterol with HDL / LDL breakdown, $20; requires 12-hour fasting
      • Cholesterol with HDL / LDL breakdown and glucose, $22; requires 12-hour fasting
      • Total cholesterol reading, one number / no breakdown, $6; no fasting required
  • Diabetes Support Group
    • Meets monthly at the Frisbie Senior Center
    • Topics include diabetic nutrition, importance of exercise, blood pressure screenings, heart disease / stroke risk
    • Activities include: instruction in proper foot care by a podiatrist, a shoe company presentation of available diabetic shoes covered by insurance, a cooking class, instructor-led chair exercises, and off-site visit of a pharmacy / grocery store
  • Babysitting Class
    • Offered annually at the Des Plaines Public Library in conjunction with Library staff and Des Plaines Police and Fire Departments
    • Contact Des Plaines Public Library or Health and Human Services for more information regarding the 2012 class
  • Home Visits
    • Provides blood pressure screenings and wellness check under a physician’s order
    • Available on a monthly basis for residents that are home bound and are not eligible for home health
  • Hearing and Vision Screenings
    • Available for parochial elementary students who do not have the services of a school nurse at a nominal charge
    • Initial screening, rescreening, and referrals are scheduled directly with each individual school
    • Follow-up is the responsibility of the school
