The City of Des Plaines offers five business assistance programs to help owners make specific improvements to support their business goals. The programs allow businesses to be reimbursed a percentage of the total cost for improvements such as new awnings, facade updates, interior build-outs, installation of outdoor dining areas, and rehabilitation of commercial shopping centers or mixed use retail buildings.

About the Program

  • New Awnings - The City's Awning Program allows businesses to be reimbursed for up to 75% of costs for installation of new awnings on commercial buildings, up to $5,000 per business.
  • Facade Improvements - The City’s Façade Program allows businesses to be reimbursed for up to 50% of costs for façade improvement work on commercial buildings, up to $20,000 per business.
  • Interior Build-outs - The City’s Interior Build-Out Program allows businesses to be reimbursed for up to 50% of costs incurred to locate a business within the City of Des Plaines, up to $15,000 per business.
  • Outdoor Dining Areas - The City’s Outdoor Dining Assistance Program allows businesses to be reimbursed for up to 50% of costs incurred in the installation of outdoor dining areas, up to $10,000 per business.
  • Rehabilitation of Shopping Centers or Mixed Use Retail - The City’s Multi-Unit Retail Grant Program allows property owners to be reimbursed for up to 50% of costs incurred for rehabilitation of commercial shopping centers or mixed use retail buildings with two (2) or more tenants, up to $50,000 per site.

Business applicants may apply for one grant of each type, with a $1,500 minimum project cost per grant.
