Battery Disposal

The City of Des Plaines will collect household batteries from Des Plaines residents at the Public Works Department, 1111 Joseph J. Schwab Road.

Residents only may drop off their household batteries Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Batteries that are acceptable are: AAA, AA, C, D, 9v, nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd), nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH), small sealed lead-acid (6V), lithium, mercury and zinc carbon. These batteries can be found, for instance, in radios, flashlights, laptop computers, toys, cellular phones, and power drills.

Billions of batteries are purchased, used and disposed of each year. Batteries account for a very small portion of the solid waste stream yet can become a hazard to human health and the environment if improperly disposed or managed. In landfills, heavy metals in batteries may leach into the soil and groundwater and eventually into lakes and streams. When batteries are incinerated, the heavy metals enter the air and become a hazard to other environmental sources. Recycling batteries helps to divert batteries from entering landfills and incinerators.

Pilot projects are initiated to not only promote recycling, but also to determine if a program would be possible to implement within a City. The success of the battery pilot program will determine if battery recycling will continue in Des Plaines.

Regular household batteries may be brought to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection (see Household Hazardous Waste Disposal).  Camera and hearing aid batteries can be returned to the store at which they were purchased.
