Traffic Unit

The mission of the Des Plaines Police Traffic Unit is to promote traffic safety through education and enforcement. The mission of the Des Plaines Police Traffic Unit is to promote traffic safety through education and enforcement. The Traffic Unit works with Citizens and other branches of City and State Government to identify problematic areas that create traffic hazards. While investigating these areas the Traffic Unit may resort to decreasing the hazard by Public Education, recommend engineering changes to the area, or strict enforcement.

The Traffic Unit has set a Specialized Tip line (847-391-5411) where citizens can call in to report special traffic related problems. These problems will be recorded and assigned to a Traffic Unit Officer to investigate. The Traffic Unit keeps an index of reported traffic-related problems to assist in future issues.

Commercial Truck Traffic is also monitored for weight restrictions and proper licensing. Overweight Trucks are a danger on the highway, and also destroy our streets. Specially Trained Officers look for these vehicles and if they appear to be in violation, will take them to trucking scales to be weighed.

The Traffic Unit also conducts studies on serious traffic accidents, in attempts to identify the causes. When a cause has been identified, the Unit will work to resolve the problem. This creates a safer environment on our highways.
