Records FAQ's
1. I need a copy of my report, but I don’t know the report
number.
It’s always easier to obtain a copy of a report when you can
provide a report number, however Records can also retrieve that
information by your name and/or location of the incident. For
security and privacy purposes, please always bring your State ID for
verification purposes.
Copies of reports are free for Des Plaines residents and $5.00
for everyone else.
2. Can you fax my report?
In order to protect the privacy of each individual’s information
on a report, we do not fax reports. You are expected to pick up the
report from the Records Department with appropriate ID information.
3. Why can’t I have a copy of my report?
There could be different reasons that would prevent Records from
releasing a copy of your report.
If you are listed on the report as a Suspect – you will be
able to view the report on your court date or your lawyer can
subpoena it.
If there is an arrest made and the case is still active in
court.
If the Detective Bureau has an active investigation which
pertains to your report.
4. I received a ticket, but I lost it and I don’t know when my
court date is.
If it is a parking ticket, Records can search by your name or
license plate number and find it.
If it is a moving violation, it is necessary for you to know the
date the ticket was issued. Tickets for moving violations are sent
to the Skokie Court House and the only way we can track these are by
the date issued. Otherwise, contact the Skokie Court House
(847-470-7250) and someone there should be able to assist you.
5. I need your department to do a background check on me.
The Records Department will do background checks for arrests in
Des Plaines ONLY.
An individual can request a background check for him/herself
for the following reasons:
i. Immigration purposes
ii. Adoption purposes
iii. Employment purposes
Certain government agencies can request a background check
based on a release from the individual the check pertains to.
For a state-wide check, contact Illinois State Police (ISP) at
847-294-4400.
Administrative Hearings FAQ
1. Can I request the hearing be for the month following the
one the department is currently issuing hearing dates for?
No, however at your court date you can ask for a month
continuance.
2. Can someone attend the hearing in my place?
Yes, you can ask a friend or family member to represent you in
the hearing.
3. I missed my hearing date, what do I do now?
Within 21 days you may petition the citation to be brought up
again in court. The petition form is at the police department front
desk.
4. I have received a citation for no front plate. I have been
issued an administrative hearing date. What do I need to bring with
me to the hearing?
A photo of the front plate securely fastened to the front of the
vehicle that received the ticket.
5. If the officer who wrote the ticket isn’t at the
administrative hearing does that mean the ticket will be dismissed?
Printed on the ticket where the officer signs, it certifies the
facts are true and correct. This is the same as if the officer was
at the administrative hearing. The final outcome is entirely up to
the hearing officer presiding over the hearing.
