Animal Control
The Des Plaines Police Department assists residents in the humane
trapping of stray or nuisance animals on their property by providing
residents with use of live animal traps. The Des Plaines Police
Department will contact ABC Wildlife or another animal control
agency to assist the homeowner with the removal of trapped skunks
and raccoons.
Where animals are impounded:
If you are interested in adopting a stray cat or dog contact the
animal hospital.

Release of impounded animals:
Animal owners must go to the Des Plaines Police Department to
obtain an impound release before picking up their animal for the
animal hospital. The owner fee for first offense is $33 and $60 for
subsequent offenses.
Most frequent animal violations:
* 6-1-5A Barking Dog
* 6-1A-2 Dog license required
* 6-1A-7 Dog/cat running at large
Procedure for vicious animals:
If the officer on a call has reasonable belief that a dog or cat
is vicious, immediate impoundment is necessary for the protection of
public health and safety.
Officers will take custody of the dog/cat and transport it to
Northwest Animal Hospital. The officer will then write a report
documenting the circumstances of the incident. The owner of the
animal will be issued a citation and will be assigned a court date.
The dog/cat will stay impounded until the court renders a decision
on the animal.
