The Health and Human Services division deals with the planning

programs. The Health and Human Services division is responsible for
programs of public health, including various health screenings,
service for senior citizens, social service information and referral
and the coordination of the City's Meals on Wheels Program.
Health and Human Services Advisory Committee
Conducts Social Service Agency Funding Reviews
Each year members of the Health and Human Services Advisory
Commission participate in the City of Des Plaines yearly social
service funding reviews. The Commission makes recommendations for
improving the application process, reviewing and participating in
each agencies presentation as well as making a recommendation for
the City Council. Due to the state of Illinois reducing or
eliminating financial support to these locally based social
services, the funding provided by the City of Des Plaines has become
more critical in helping these local agencies and their programs
assist our residents who are in need.
Over the past several years, the City of Des Plaines and the
Health and Human Services Advisory Commission has supported the
following agencies and services which include:
- Subsidized medical wellness program for low income/non insured
residents through the Access to Care Program;
- Community counseling/education services through Children’s
Advocacy Center of Northwest Cook County, Northwest Center Against
Sexual Assault, Maine Center, Inc. and Salvation Army: Community
Counseling Center;
- Senior citizen support and outreach services through Center of
Concern, North Shore Senior Center, and the congregate meal
program located at the Frisbie Senior Center;
- Emergency youth shelter and support services through The
Harbour, Inc. and Shelter, Inc.;
- Avenues to Independence provides job placement and vocational
training as well as residential programs for adults with
developmental disabilities
- Journeys from PADS to HOPE provides resources to the homeless
and "at-risk" individuals and families.
- Affordable daycare through Northwest Suburban Day Care Center;
- End of life support care through Rainbow Hospice; and
- Food assistance for residents of Des Plaines through The
Self-Help Closet &Pantry of Des Plaines;
- Promotion of local volunteer opportunities through The
Volunteer Center of Northwest Suburban Chicago.
If you are aware of any social service agency that should be
considered for funding, please contact the City’s Health and Health
and Human Services Division at 847-391-5480.
