Fire Prevention Division

The Fire Prevention Division reviews plans for potential hazards in remodeling and new construction, presents fire prevention and education programs to schools, hospitals, hi-rise residents, church and civic organizations and conducts a voluntary single-family home Fire Safety Inspection Program. The City of Des Plaines Fire Prevention Division staff consists of a Division Chief, and three sworn firefighters who have received special training in Fire Investigation and Fire Prevention. One of the duties of the Fire Prevention Division is to inspect commercial, institutional and multi-family residential dwellings annually to check for fire and life safety hazards to prevent the loss of life and property from fire.

The Fire Prevention Division also reviews new building plans to insure the proper installation of fire sprinkler, fire alarm, and fire suppression systems. The fire inspectors conduct inspections during different phases of the construction project to ensure that the contractor is adhering to the current codes and standards. Currently the city follows the 2006 International Fire Code, NFPA 2006 Life Safety Code, 2006 NFPA 13R & 13D Sprinkler Code & 2007 NFPA 72 Fire Alarm Code.

In the event of a fire, the Fire Prevention Division follows the Illinois State Fire Marshall mandate to determine cause and origin of all fires. If the Fire Prevention Division determines the fire is the result of arson, the Fire Prevention Division has the authority, in conjunction with the Police Department, to launch the initial investigation and follow all the way through to prosecution.

The Fire Prevention Division conducts public education programs, including Juvenile Fire Setter’s Intervention Program, babysitting classes and visits the cities schools to educate children in our community about the importance of fire safety.

The Fire Prevention Division also conducts FREE home safety inspections. Please call 847-391-5340 to schedule an appointment.
