Storage Sheds

  1. A permit application must be completed and submitted with two (2) copies of current Plat of Survey. The shed must be located on the plat, including distance from property lines and dimensions of garage.
  2. Contractor must have City of Des Plaines contractor’s license.
  3. Sheds must be located not less than 5’ from property lines and not in any easement.
  4. Maximum shed size is 150 square feet. Maximum shed height is 15 feet.
  5. Storage sheds may be constructed of wood frame or metal panels. For wood frame sheds, please submit a detailed construction drawing (samples are attached and may be completed and submitted as your drawing). For pre-fabricated units, please submit the pamphlet that you receive with the kit.
  6. Drawings must note how shed is to be anchored, such as auger anchors.
  7. Sheds may be placed on a minimum 4" thick concrete slab or on a minimum 4" gravel base. The shed may be anchored to the slab.
  8. Sheds constructed within 3’ of residence must have one hour fire rated materials installed on walls.
  9. If the property already contains an attached or detached garage, only one additional accessory structure is allowed. Maximum size is 150 sq. ft.
  10. The overall height of an accessory structure shall not exceed 15 feet.
  11. The overall height can be calculated as follows:

  13. The highest point of a flat or shed roof.
  14. The deck level of a mansard roof.
  15. The (average) mid-point between eave edge and ridge.

Be advised that the above-mentioned are guidelines. Each permit is treated individually and certain other requirements may apply. Once this information is submitted a correct determination can be made.

Any exceptions to the above may require a variation.
