Driveways and Paved
(Hard) Surfaces
- A permit application must be completed and brought in with two
(2) Plats of Survey. Survey must indicate location of driveway on
private property and driveway approach on City right-of-way.
- A driveway can be no wider than 18’ at the sidewalk with 3’0"
flare at street. All driveways must be paved from the street to
the property line (including sidewalk) with concrete 6" in depth
or with a 2 " overlay of blacktop on a 6" stone base.
- Concrete on private property should be 4" thick with a 6" base
of CA-6 gravel. All hard surfaces shall not drain toward
neighboring properties. Curbs, swales can be utilized to avoid
this problem.
- Driveway (including apron in parkway): All detached and
attached garages must have hard surface driveways both on public
and private property, existing or new. (Brick pavers are only
allowed on private property.*)
- All public sidewalks that are incorporated within the driveway
shall be six inches (6"0") thick and constructed of concrete.
- All approaches must provide depressed curbs of type and size
as specified by the City of Des Plaines Engineering Department.

- Buffalo boxes must be blocked out in a 2’0" X 2’0" square.
- Framed and compacted area must be inspected prior to pouring
and 24 hours minimum notice is required to set up the inspection.

is treated individually and certain other requirements may apply.
Once the above-mentioned information is submitted, the correct
determination can be made.
Any exceptions to the above may require a variation.
*Brick pavers are not allowed in the City right-of-way (apron)
without a License Agreement. A License Agreement is required to
install pavers on the apron and must be approved by City Council.
