Building Permits Info
WHEN IS A PERMIT REQUIRED?
Permits are required for a number of different projects in order
to assure that these projects meet applicable Building Codes. The
City of Des Plaines has adopted Building Codes in order to protect
the health, safety and welfare of our residents.
Following is a list of projects that require a City of Des
Plaines Building Permit. This list is not all-inclusive:
SHEDS
FENCES
DECKS AND STAIRS
ROOFING, RE-ROOF OR TEAR-OFF
DOORS AND WINDOWS IF THE SIZE OF THE OPENING CHANGES
CONCRETE, ASPHALT OR PAVER BRICK DRIVEWAYS, SIDEWALKS, PATIOS,
STOOPS AND STAIRS
SIDING
NEW ELECTRIC SERVICE OR ADDITIONAL DEVICES REQUIRING NEW LINES
LOW VOLTAGE ALARMS AND PHONE WIRING
PLUMBING (WATER HEATERS, ETC.)
SEWER REPAIRS OR CLEANOUTS
NEW STRUCTURES AND ANY STRUCTURAL CHANGES
EXTENSIVE INTERIOR REMODELING WORK
SWIMMING POOLS, SPAS, HOT TUBS
MECHANICAL SYSTEMS (HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING)
GRADING CHANGES, RETENTION WALLS OR OTHER LANDSCAPING
INVOLVING TOPOGRAPHICAL CHANGES
DEMOLITIONS
SHORING AND FOUNDATION REPAIRS
SIGNS, BANNERS AND TENTS
FIRE SPRINKLERS
All permits may be applied for at the City of Des Plaines
Building Department at 1420 Miner St., Room 301. Most projects
costing over $15,000 will require stamped architectural plans. All
permit applications require a current Plat of Survey. Licensed,
bonded and insured contractors are required for many types of
permits.
