2009 Press Release: Mayor and City Council Acknowledge Sparklers Softball Team
For immediate release
November 19, 2009
The Des Plaines City Council welcomed
members of the Des Plaines Sparklers Girls’ Softball Team at the
Monday, November 16, 2009 Meeting. The team is comprised of players
from Maine West High School, Chippewa Middle School, and Friendship
Junior High. The Sparklers were launched in 2008 by Head Coach,
Manager and General Manager Kristen Proffitt, who started coaching
when she was in college. Proffitt started the Des Plaines team
because as a young resident, softball player she had to play for
teams from neighboring communities and recognized a need for a local
team. According to Proffitt, “I started the Des Plaines Sparklers
travel softball team so that Des Plaines girls could compete at a
high level without having to find a team from another City.”
