2008 Press Release: Maine West Cheerleaders Featured At Council
Meeting
For immediate release
February 22, 2008
Maine West High School Cheerleaders were recently featured at a
Des Plaines City Council Meeting. Mayor Tony Arredia introduced the
team and announced their accomplishments that include receiving
first place at the Illinois Cheerleading Coaches Association (ICCA)
Regional, 4th at their Illinois High School Association (IHSA)
Sectional and qualifying and competing at the ICCA and IHSA State
competition. This is Maine West’s second year competing in the IHSA
sectionals. Cheerleading has been an official IHSA sport for three
years. In addition, the team received two 1st place trophies at the
Universal Cheerleading Association (USA) Summer Camp with six
members being named "AllStars" and the team being recognized as "the
most spirited award." Locally, the cheerleaders participate in
several community projects including the Des Plaines Park Clean Up,
Turkey Trot (benefiting the Des Plaines Self Help and Food Pantry),
and helping host a youth camp through the Park Ridge Park District.
The team is planning to host a youth camp for Kindergarten-8th
graders, July 1-3, 2008, and will walk and perform in the 4th of
July Parade. Coach Sharon Colbert will be helping head the upcoming
"Youth Cheer" programs in the Des Plaines area. The team will also
host the UCA’s Windy City Competition Sunday, March 2, 2008.
