2008 Press Release: Metropolitan Alliance of Police Telephone Solicitations

The Metropolitan Alliance of Police (MAP) is the union representing Patrol Officers and Sergeants in the Des Plaines Police Department for collective bargaining purposes. It has come to my attention that this union is conducting telephone solicitations of Des Plaines residents and businesses seeking financial contributions that directly assist the police department.

Residents and businesses should be informed that no Des Plaines Police Officer is involved in the practice of soliciting money over the telephone and these alleged fundraising contributions are never given to the Des Plaines Police Department. These contributions are solicited for union activities.

Each fall, the Des Plaines Police Association conducts a mailing to previous contributors seeking donations for a variety of civic groups that we support throughout the year. This mailing is conducted in conjunction with the annual dinner-dance event.

Citizens should be aware that these telemarketers will misrepresent themselves as Police Officers in an effort to gain trust. Des Plaines Police Officers do not solicit donations on the phone and do not pick up donations from resident’s homes or businesses on behalf of the Metropolitan Alliance of Police.
