The U.S. Conference of Mayors, Novelis Inc. and Keep America
Beautiful, Inc. (KAB) recently named the City of Des Plaines as a
winner in the fourth annual Cans for Cash: City Recycling Challenge.
The announcement came at the U.S. Conference of Mayors 76th Winter
Meeting in Washington, D.C.
Des Plaines recycled a total of 1,120,660 pounds to become a
$5,000 winner in "Category 3," which is a city with a population of
50,000-99,999. Des Plaines had also won this challenge in 2005.
To encourage recycling the program challenges like-sized cities
to compete against each other in aluminum can collection for
monetary awards. During October 2007, more than 50 cities collected
over 191 million used beverage cans.
The aluminum can is the country’s most recycled beverage
container and has been for more than 20 years. In 2006, U.S.
recyclers recovered nearly 52% of the more than 100 billion aluminum
beverage cans that were produced in the country.
Still, more than a billion dollars worth of aluminum cans were
not recovered, highlighting the importance of programs such as Cans
for Cash to raise awareness of the benefits of recycling.
The goals of the Recycling Challenge complement this and
demonstrate how aluminum can recycling positively impacts the
environment. Participating cities contributed to the recycling of
more than 4.5 million pounds of aluminum cans. By recycling these
aluminum cans, cities avoided more than 24,000 tons of greenhouse
gas emissions, which is equivalent to taking more than 25,000 cars
off the road for a year.
Des Plaines will use the prize money to increase and enhance
recycling efforts throughout Des Plaines.
