
2007 Press Release: New Des Plaines Fire Chief Jaeger Announced

Des Plaines City Manager David Niemeyer has announced
that Deputy Fire Chief Randy Jaeger will be appointed to the title
of Fire Chief following the September, 2007 retirement of John
Heavey from Department’s top position.
Jaeger, who has risen through the ranks of the Des Plaines Fire
Department since his initial hiring twenty-four years ago has served
in the following capacities: Firefighter Paramedic, 1983-1990;
Lieutenant (Company Officer), 1990-1993; Captain (Training Division)
1993-1999; Captain (Shift Commander) 1999-2001; Battalion Commander
(Shift Commander) 2001-2003; and Deputy Fire Chief, 2003- Present.
Prior to his career in Des Plaines, Jaeger worked for the Village
of Bensenville serving as a Firefighter/EMT, 1979-1982 and
Lieutenant, 1982-1983. He taught Fire Science Technology on a part
time basis at Oakton Community College, 1992-1995.
His military career includes serving in the United States Army
with the 82nd Airborne Division, 307 Engineer Battalion, Fort Bragg,
North Carolina.
Jaeger holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Science
Services from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois
1982, and is a member of the National Fire Academy’s Executive
Officer Program, Emmitsburg, Maryland.
He received Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training at
Northwest Community Hospital, Arlington Heights and has numerous
Illinois State Fire Marshal certifications.

Plaines. He has an understanding of the community, its needs and
priorities, as well as the internal workings of the City
Departments. He comes to us with first hand experience, knowledge
and the willingness to work for the betterment of the City," City
Manager David Niemeyer said.
Current Fire Chief John Heavey commented "I fully support Randy
Jaeger as Fire Chief and look forward to working with him and
mentoring him for the position between now and September. The Fire
Department will be in good hands, as will the City."
