This year’s Relay For Life will take place Friday, June 26, 2009, at Maine West High School, 1755 S. Wolf Road.

Hope and Cure, those are two four lettered words that we love to hear, especially when they are involved with the American Cancer Society and the Relay For Life.  On June 26, 2009, a Carnival of Hope will occur for one night, and one night only, bringing the communities of Des Plaines and Park Ridge together in order to Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back.

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s national signature event and is as much an awareness raiser, as it is a fundraiser.  The Relay For Life of Des Plaines/Park Ridge will take place at Maine West High School, located at 1755 S. Wolf Rd. Des Plaines, IL, on June 26, 2009.  The opening ceremony will begin at 6 pm with a celebratory survivor lap, followed by carnival games for children and adults, a raffle tent with fantastic local business contributed prizes, LOTS of food, two DJ’s spinning music all night long, as well as a luminaria memoriam ceremony to remember those who lost their battle with cancer.

Relay For Life brings together communities in the fight against cancer.  Armed with comfortable shoes and an array of supplies needed for an overnighter, young and old alike will use the illuminated path to guide their feet and hearts, as they walk around the clock.

The public is HIGHLY encouraged and invited to attend and participate in the Relay For Life event.  The goal of this year’s Relay For Life of Des Plaines and Park Ridge is to raise $50,000 for cancer research, community educational programs, advocacy initiatives and support services for area patients and families.

Are you or do you know someone who is a cancer survivor?  To date we have 48 survivors registered to walk the first lap on June 26 and we invite those who have survived and have not registered to do so, as you can see, you are not alone.  If a survivor is interested in attending, please contact the American Cancer Society at 847-368-1166 or sign up on-line by visiting www.relayforlifedesplaines.com.

Looking to create your own team, don’t worry there’s still time.  Join the 24 teams already signed up to participate by visiting www.relayforlifedesplaines.com and with a few clicks of the mouse you will be registered and ready to walk for hope and a cure.

The Carnival of Hope will come to an end at 6 am Saturday June 27, 2009, but that doesn’t mean that you missed your opportunity to take up the fight against cancer.  To support the Relay For Life of Des Plaines and Park Ridge prior to or even after the event, please visit www.relayforlifedesplaines.com and donate on-line, as every penny and dollar raised brings us that much closer to fighting cancer and finding a cure.

For the most up to date cancer related information call 1-800-ACS-2345 or visit www.cancer.org.
