Health Fair Spells Success
Representatives of Des Plaines Pounds Down were more than pleased
with the turnout at the Des Plaines Family Health Fair, 10:00 am –
1:00 pm, Saturday, October 11, 2008, at the Des Plaines Park
District’s Prairie Lakes Community Center, 515 E. Thacker Street.
Over 200 individuals turned out to undergo a variety of free health
screenings, gather information on healthy lifestyles and sample
healthy cooking at a nutritional cooking demonstration.
The recently formed Des Plaines Pounds Down Committee organized
the family-oriented event which featured services and amenities,
many which were free, offered by local health/fitness related
agencies and businesses. It was one of several recent events
sponsored by Des Plaines Pounds Down, a program initially launched
by Des Plaines Mayor Tony Arredia and 5th Ward Alderman
Carla Brookman. Concerned about improving the overall health of the
entire community, the two Officials evaluated Oklahoma City’s
Program entitled "This City is Going On A Diet." Oklahoma City Mayor
Mick Corneti had spearheaded that program. The Des Plaines program
was inspired by the program, but was adapted to the needs of the
local community.
One of the highlights of the Health Fair included a Healthy
Cooking Demonstration provided Advocate Lutheran General Hospital,
Sara A. Swiderski, RD, LDN; Anita Brown, Culinary Coach; and Diane
Schmidt, Sharing the Gift of Health. Horton Chiropractic sponsored
the demonstration. Joe Caputo & Sons Fruit Market donated food items
for the event and Casa Royale Banquets provided tablecloths.
Bone Density Screenings on the Portable Dexa Scanner and Sleep
Screenings were provided by the Immediate Care/Occupational Health
Clinic/Resurrection/Holy Family Medical Center. Free Tote Bags were
also provided by the Immediate Care/ Occupational Health
Clinic/Resurrection/Holy Family Medical Center.
Cholesterol Screenings/Blood Glucose, Body Fat/Body Mass Index
(BMI) Testing Blood Pressure Checks, Hearing & Vision Screening were
provided by the Immediate Care/Occupational Health
Clinic/Resurrection/Holy Family Medical Center, Advocate Lutheran
General Hospital, and the Des Plaines Health & Human Services
Division. Many screenings were offered free.
A panel entitled "Health & Wellness from the Chiropractic
Perspective" was hosted by Horton Chiropractic, Chiro One Wellness
Center, and Des Plaines Chiropractic. Dr. Janet Horton,
Dr. Sarah Ghorbanian and Dr. Michael Bagby of these practices
have been active members of Des Plaines Pounds Down since its
inception in the summer.
Lattof YMCA provided the Climbing Wall for children outside the
Prairie Lakes facility where the Health Fair was held. In addition,
there were drawings for free memberships at the Des Plaines Park
District’s Prairie Lakes Fitness Center, tours of Prairie Lakes
Fitness Center and Free Trials.
Members of the Des Plaines Police and Fire Departments, as well
as a representative of Cook County Sheriff Dart’s Office, sponsored
displays at the Health Fair offering free giveaways and information
on safety, security, and fire prevention.
According to Shelli Sarg of the Des Plaines Park District and one
of the key coordinators of the Family Health Fair, "We were
extremely pleased with the turnout for the Family Health Fair.
Today’s families are truly interested in healthy lifestyles and Des
Plaines Pounds Down, an all encompassing health/fitness focused
program, provides something for everyone. Members of Pounds Down
become entitled to discounted health related programs and receive
important information regarding opportunities on how they can
improve their lifestyles."
The Des Plaines Park District recently issued official Pounds
Down cards that entitle members to these opportunities. In addition,
Pounds Down members are given log cards encouraging members to keep
track of their blood pressure, weight and activity on a regular
basis.
"Since its inception several local agencies and businesses have
joined offering incentives and venues to assist individuals in their
efforts to become "healthier." These incentives concern health,
exercise and diet," Alderman Carla Brookman said.
Previous Des Plaines Pounds Down events have included an Exercise
in the Park series and a Walking Club. Several health related
businesses in the community have offered discounted programs and
opportunities to their clients if they are Pounds Down members.
Pounds Down members, who already number over 400, are encouraged to
make healthy personal choices regarding these incentives.
