The preservation and
presentation of the history of Des Plaines is the primary activity
carried out at the Historical Museum. The Museum opened in
1969 and is located in the 1906 Benjamin F. Kinder house at 789
Pearson Street. Changing exhibits chronicle the development
and history of Des Plaines, and exhibits within the period rooms
depict decorating trends of the early twentieth century.
Educational and cultural programs for the enrichment of the entire
community are offered at the Museum and various sites throughout the
City.
The Museum also functions as an auxiliary to local schools by
supplementing their programs on local history. Slide programs,
tours, demonstrations and lectures are available through the Museum.
The Museum's library contains a wealth of primary source materials
and photographs which relate to the City and surrounding Maine
Township.
The Des Plaines Historical Society is headquartered at the
Museum. Chartered in 1967, the Historical Society has a
membership of individuals, families, and businesses interested in
the preservation of local history.
Visitors to the Kid’s Korner in
the Des Plaines History Center will be transformed to life in the
early pioneer days along the City’s namesake river, thanks to a
nature mural painted by local artist Jeffrey Scott Goranson and
funded by the Des Plaines Kiwanis Club.
